snowy saturday

30 January 2010

Finally! The forecasters were right. Our town will be shut down for a few days because of the 6 inches of snow that fell from last night until this morning. Fine, powdery snow. Not the stuff to make snowmen with but the white perfection of winter. With a windchill of 10, we won't be playing in it much today, but we (okay...I) had to get out in it. Nevermind that Kate has a hacking cough again. Kid, get out in the snow; fresh air is good for you!

Matt sees snow differently than I do -- he awoke and immediately had to get it off the sidewalk and driveway. First a shovel; next the leaf blower. I knew I had to get out in it before it was GONE! Drake loves running in the snow (always knew he and I had a connection), so we bundled up and out we went. We filled the birdfeeders (Drake was sniffing out the bread crusts I put out last night when I made a breakfast casserole) and then Kate went down the slide a couple of times. She was not as into the snow as I would have liked...guess we need more of it to get used to it.

Kate's latest, greatest, and best request.

crafty

I was out of school for snow (you can even see trace amounts in the backyard in the picture). Mom got Kate this fantastic craft kit to make a heart wreath. We made it in the morning so that we had some entertainment that was not just TV. I should have put the big hearts on first and then had Kate help because she wanted to do it all and I felt guilty each time I said "no! Let mama do it and then you can." She lost some interest but came back once I made the smaller hearts "stickers." I think it turned out much better than the junky photo did!

stars and cupcakes

Today we decorated cupcakes. This activity is causing my rear end to double in size. I mean, why wouldn't I buy my favorite (white) mix and then make homemade buttercream frosting?! The more decorated, however, the less I enjoy them. We took most of them to the sitter's house today for the rest of the kiddos to enjoy. (I kept a few, undecorated ones at home, of course).

Good thing Kate eats a few of them, too!

and...action

"Picture, Mama." This is the latest request. Of course, she preferred action shots. All I needed was a picture to send Fran of the outfit she purchased for Kate last fall. All I wanted was a smile. I can't say she isn't working on it.

Pop Tarts in MY bed!

13 January 2010

One morning each weekend, Matt gets up with Kate. For an extra thirty minutes, I remain in bed (with the 100 lb. dog vying for my undivided attention). Once Kate realizes I am still "sleeping," the door is opened and in she comes with Duckie and her breakfast (and a request to watch T-B). Good thing I hold my ground and put her on Matt's side. I don't want to sleep in the crumbs!

03 January 2010

Since Christmas break started:

  • I have been sick; Kate has been sick (both different) OVER 2 WEEKS!!
  • Our dishwasher quit working, was fixed, quit working
  • Our dryer's heating element went out
  • We went to a party where I left all beverages, Pyrex dishes, horns (for NYE), and my camera
  • The outside temperature has been below freezing most of the time
  • We had a party for the UK/UL game
  • Matt has begun to get sick.
Tomorrow, we go back to school. On New Year's day, we visited Waffle House. Kate finally ate a "meal." This meant more than a couple of bites. I didn't suffer with that same affliction while sick, unfortunately.

I hope 2010 continues to improve. Of course, there is only one way to go from here!
